Career, Children and Canines

whippetAs it states on the main page of this site, my name is Mary Magee and I live with my Chinese Cresteds and Whippets in Indianapolis Indiana. As a child, I grew up in the country, with cattle in the fields around our home, skipping rocks, climbing trees and enjoying animal companionship.

Over the years I, or my sons, have had animals ranging from cats, dogs, mice/rats, snakes, lizards, birds, oh and there was a prairie dog, and a spiny back mouse! We even had a rabbit who had babies which we raised. Both of my sons have always been very gentle with animals, even as toddlers as are my grand children.

As to my work aspect of life ... I am a graphic designer who, for 10 years, published the Whippet Watch magazine, and now do freelance design work as well as make dog collars and dog leashes. Where it all started

Enriching my life

Funny how one puppy can totally change one woman's life, but that is exactly what Gabe did!

Gabe was my Valentine's Day present in 1994, and I know how blessed I was to have had him in my life for 13 1/2 years. He taught so much to both my sons and me. He truly was beyond compare. (d Beisinger photo). With Gabe, I started racing and enjoying dog shows. Although he was strictly a pet quality pup, he had so much heart that anything I wanted him to do, he did with total dedication. He got me hooked, big time!

A few months after he came into my life I obtained his sister, Tara. She was my queeny girl. I worked hard at learning how to show and after about 2 years I finally went in the ring with her myself instead of sitting on the sideline and watching her breeder Kenna Hodges show her for me. She was such a blessing and also taught me much, including patience and that even if others don't like you, it doesn't matter as long as those you love accept you for who you are. I was a very lucky woman to have had her in my life.

As the old saying goes ... it's all history from there. I added Gennie a few months later and bred my first litter when Tara was 4 1/2 years old. I felt I needed at least that much time to learn all I could. I studied pedigrees, read books, magazines and went to as many events as possible (pretty much every weekend!) and finally I was ready. My first litter was sired by Ch/UCh/CanCh Sonseeahray's Fiat Design, SC who was owned by Mary Alderman of Jaama Whippets. And then there was PhaseYa, my princess P. And so it goes ...

chinese crestedIn 2006 I had the first Chinese Crested puppy in my home for several months (his owner lived with us at the time) and I was hooked. I'd enjoyed the breed from afar but after IggyPop I knew I would eventually add the breed to my home and life.

In 2008 I did just that! Possum (affectionally titled "Lil' Queenie") came to live with me and she was been a total joy! Crested girls are just simply FUN! Possum has gone back to her previous owner and her son, Biggie Smalls (UCh SaeSi Equiss Notorious B.I.G.), has remained here to continue his show career.
